ABOUT US

"Passionate" in the beginning…

"We preach Christ crucified……… who of God is made unto us Wisdom, and
Righteousness, and Sanctification, and Redemption."

So proclaimed the handbill advertising the services to be held on Sunday 30th September 1906 in the Great Eastern Halls and conducted by Rev George Sharpe, formerly of Parkhead Congregational Church. That Sunday saw the birth of our church. One week later on 6th October 1906, the Parkhead Pentecostal Church was organised with 81 charter members, with Rev Sharpe as their minister. Just over one year later, funds had been raised to build a new church in Burgher Street, which opened on 30th November 1907. It is the building in which we still worship today. By the end of 1907 the membership had risen to 225, with 342 in Sunday School. A new community church had emerged with fire, commitment and enthusiasm. God was indeed blessing the "passion" of George Sharpe and his congregation!

George Sharpe's earliest ministry had taken shape in America and those connections had been maintained through his early years at Parkhead. In 1915, along with some other churches, many of which had been started by Sharpe, our church joined with the Pentecostal Church of the Nazarene in the States, with their headquarters in Kansas City. In 1919, the word "Pentecostal" was dropped and the name became and still is, "The Church of the Nazarene". Following Dr Sharpe's death in 1948, the church was renamed "Sharpe Memorial Church of the Nazarene" in his memory and is still known as such today.

"Passionate" in the present…
